Before putting the finishing photos into my VSP, I had to consider two things. First, I had to consider how the boy’s mind changed about running away, and second, what made him change his mind. At first I wasn’t sure how I was going to do my story but then Dr. Archibald suggested that there should be some event that happened to the boy along his travels that made him reflect upon what has happened and made him go back home.
Thinking about this further, I came up with the idea of the boy meeting a homeless man. I figured this would be a good idea because the homeless man can give some insight to the boy of how he may end up if he keeps running away. The boy, seeing the impoverished homeless man, would then start to open his eyes and see that he does not want to live that way. This still brings up the question of what would change his mind completely.
After thinking awhile of what event could change his mind, I came up with a few ideas. First, I came up with the idea of somehow finding out one of his parents developed cancer and he wanted to be home to be with his parents. After thinking about that, I thought about how it’d be possible for him to actually find that information out. The only way he would possibly find out was if it was in the newspaper, but they don’t post in the newspaper every time someone has cancer, which threw out that idea. Continuing to think, I thought of what has helped me in my life, and that is the bible. So I decided to have the homeless man give “hope” to the boy by giving him his only possession, the Holy Bible.
Upon deciding to go with the idea of having the boy’s view change through faith, I took it upon myself to find certain verses in the Bible that have to do with the struggles he faced earlier in the story: having too much homework, his parents yelling at him, and his struggles with a bully. Through reading the Bible, the boy gained faith and also figured out what he needs to do in his life, which helps bring the story to an end.
